I once was hired to present on job search strategies. As I was going through and speaking on techniques for a tactful job search, I recognized there was a disconnect in my audience. 

   Though the information in and of itself was vital, there were other obstacles on their mind hindering them from grasping the content. I quickly pivoted my lecture/presentation and opened a dialogue. I discovered my clients were battling the concept of self-worth among other things. They didn’t need job search strategies- YET. They needed a workshop to eliminate self doubt and recognize their potential. It was a painful but vital lesson to me as a consultant, speaker and trainer. I touched base with them after our session and decided to go back to the drawing board to meet them where they are next time.
    As a speaker, it is important to be tuned into the emotional faculties of the room in which you are presenting. Sometimes, it’s ok to stop and reevaluate because after all, it’s about them, not you.
